MAA: 2009 Case Study for Higher FPS

Post by THE ARCHANGEL » Mon Jan 25, 2010 3:29 pm

Before the 2009 Summer season began the MAA was getting a lot of comments/complaints on our FPS rules (400 FPS w/ .2 gram BBs) as many newly manufactured guns were coming out of the box hotter than our maximum. It was decided that for the 2009 Summer season the MAA would raise it's FPS rates to 450 FPS w/ .2 gram BB's as well as record data on the guns, manufacturers, and players, to see what the trend was empirically. The following is the data that was collected and if for no other reason to see the breakdown it's very interesting.

Thus far the MAA has made NO decisions on what it will do for the 2010 Summer season. Keep in mind it was NEVER our intention to permanently change our rules to allow a higher FPS rate. A FPS hike simply because people "wanted" it is not the point. This study was clearly to investigate the claims that "all new guns are coming hotter than the MAA FPS rates and that is not fair". In the end the data is open to interpretation but the MAA Officers and Membership will be reviewing the data and will discuss options for the 2010 Season.

* A big thank you to all that assisted over the 2009 season to record data. I know it was difficult and caused some slower starts.

Some of the data is abridged and may have some incorrect details but I translated the paperwork as best as possible. If you see blatant errors you can PM me but at this point the data stands as it is.

The following are JPGs of the actual data. I will post each as a separate entry so that notes can be added later.

Questions, comments, notes? Post them after the data.
