Be careful when buying/selling Airsoft via PayPal

Post by Erik » Mon Jan 23, 2006 9:27 am

A friend of mine recently mentioned that his PayPal account got frozen, locking up a couple of hundred dollars he had in it.

My friend, whose name is Richard, was selling 2 real-steel magazines for a Browning HiPower. The person who paid him for the merchandise put "Hi-Power Magazines" in the item description.

PayPal then froze Richards' account for violating this portion of their terms of service:

Richard did not recieve any notice his account was frozen; he found out about this when someone else tried to pay him via PayPal and could not. Both of the buyers in this case had their accounts frozen as well.

Based on this, I'd advise anyone using PayPal to never use real gun terminology when using a PayPal account. I'm not going to stop using PayPal (I've yet to find a better alternative) but it's something to be aware of.

Also,

Do not accept credit cards on paypal! Well, unless you either know the guy or you know what your doing.

Way to many scams happen this way.

I can concur with Revelations statement. Paypal has a really crappy policy that they will reverse charges on you almost at a whim, up to 6 months after you have already gotten the payment.

Which I find ludicris because the CC companys policy is they they cover and deal with the fraud as long as you got a clear charge through.

Thats what happened to me when I sold my M16/203 a few years ago.I had the money and like a month and a half later they reversed it. I sent in everything they asked and nothing ever came of it. The bad part was I had spent it already and it put me in the hole and they froze my account. I reluctantly brought it back to zero then closed my account. I have never used paypal since. It is really too bad there is not a better alternative because they have so many loopholes in their terms of service to protect them.

I just use money orders when I am buying from somebody or a credit card if the company/site supports them.

This topic is pretty old, but I wanted to sticky it for people who have not heard about it.
