Vietnam game...developing

Post by Irish » Tue Dec 02, 2008 5:34 pm

Hey guys,

Shady and I are talking about having a Vietnam theme game next spring. It could be an annual game. I would like to gauge interest. If there is enough interest, we'll plan a meeting with the rest of T.O.C..
Requirements would be tight.
Period loadouts will be required. Anyone showing up without 100% period gear will be turned away.
No details now. One format that we've talked about is having all the players on the US side, and recruiting an OPFOR to play the NV. Nothing set in stone of course.

Poll will be up for thirty days.

EDIT: See recent post (1/28/2010)

Why can't you select more than one item in your poll?

I have a couple of 100% period US(regular army and GB/SF) loadouts as well as a complete VC(pajamas, pointy hat, and ho chi mihn sandals) loadout and a mostly filled out NVA loadout.

My $.02 would be that it should be an 24+ hour emersion event with the US having to defend a Firebase or a FOP all night as well as the normal harassment and S&D missions.

I am partial for being on the North side.

I can't wait to field my custom build SKS.

I have period correct US load-out and I'm working on a VC load-out.

I'm up for the game no matter what - I love TOC's ops - but I wouldn't want to use my VN loadout unless everyone playing was using a period loadout too.

Having said that, I've got a complete accurate US loadout including an awesome XM607 carbine, and I'd love to run with it in a VN-game.

I'm okay with some concessions - not everyone is going to buy period stuff. But you have to set some limits, or people will take it to the extreme. At Op:Irene, you had "Somali militia" carrying M4s with optics and wearing MOLLE gear.

Elsewhere in the VN forum are some proposed rules for VN games, which I think are pretty reasonable and would allow the most players without completely compromising the verisimilitude.

I can get together a VC, NV, or Villager outfit and I would be definitely down.

Along with what Erik said, a few small concessions may be for the best. For example, my knees and ankles couldn't stand running around in sandals or barefoot, and our pampered feet may not stand up the best to period US footwear. Being a little lenient on footwear is a concession to the fact that we don't have callouses on our feet from running around a jungle our whole lives.

I'd love to do a VN game, that'd be awesome. Unfortunately, I'm working on my first gear and gun layout, so I probably will not have the funds to do a rig (I'm at around $800, and yes, I know that's not a lot compared to you'all, and I also realize that airsoft, along with life, costs money  ) Eventually, if you guys get this going, I'll put a little on the side, and get some VN-era gear (Most likely around 2010, but that's good, because I'll have more airsoft experience under my belt).

I think that idea is awesome, and I'd be down for it, if I had the gear. :D

By the way, I know you guys know what you're doing, but if you want any ideas, the BattleSim guys in WA. are hardcore VN and WWII re-enactors, and they've got awesome pics and suggestions for any milsim of those eras http://www.battlesim.com/.

I'd be up for one, though I'm about %60 away from a US impression as opposed to 90% completed VC one. I was actually considering, if I get my loadout done soon enough, of going to Operation Cedar Falls (http://www.freewebs.com/twenty5th_airso ... events.htm) in Ohio.

Defintly for It. Ive got a US outfit, and something that would work for VC.

Judging by the poll numbers, it doesn't look like there will be enough people for a Vietnam Period game. The poll is up for another two weeks, but I think the majority of the votes are in, and there is a clear majority of people that just don't want to take the time to put a proper loadout together. Quick question - Are you guys planning on having era-guns available for rent (Both Vietnam and WWII)?

Because if you had the guns, I would (and perhaps a few others) be willing to pick up some gear, and just rent a rifle until I had a little more dough for one. Based on what I know so far, I don't think you guys will. (I think if you guys got a set-date, rented era-guns, and made this a little bigger then just a skirmish, more people would be interested). Sure, it might raise the price up a bit, but if I'm going out there to do something more then a weekend-warrior-typical skirmish in more-than-half-a-century old gear, I will be willing to lay down $50+ for a game. I'm not saying special effects to the max, but just a really-well thought out game lasting a little longer then the typical time (of course, you probably already had that planned. ;) ). Maybe that's just me, but whatever.

Renting guns is a huge pain. Very, very few do it.

Bummer about the Vietnam game. Its something to keep rolling around in your head, though. I think you could put together a great game.

Before you edited your reply you said you were "asian". I was just wondering what the quotes meant. Usually it implies "almost" or "Not quite".

Btw, I am posting this from India right now, which is located in Asia. Not to be confused with "Asia".

It was an honest question, no need to be an ass about it. I find the recent lack of respect on this board disturbing. but on topic, I could get a VC loadout together rather quickly. I also have some period gear from WW2 I would just need to get a weapon.

Agreed.
Ha, I have the gun, I just need the gear. ( :x ) Maybe if you did the event late summer, more people would be open to it? I don't know, I just think it'd be an awesome game.

I guess I'm too late to cast a vote... but I've got 2 Nam accurate US Army grunt loadouts and I like the idea of a Vietnam themed op.

Just a note to let you guys know this idea is NOT dead. I am currently working different forums to see who else we could pull in for this.

This is from a group called Battlesim, an event known as Recondo school.
From 2006 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2oFFioDexk
From 2008 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FcPUlIyJC4
This is what I want our game to emulate. Total immersion. Check it, it's the heat!
