2003 USMC loadout help

Post by CPT. Fox » Sun Apr 06, 2014 9:41 pm

So. I'm planning to do a 2003 USMC loadout. here's a kit list. (asterisk indicates item I need)

-woodland shirt
-woodland trouser
-MOLLE II M16 double magazine pouch(x3)* (2 ordered)
-Woodland OTV* (ordered)
-MOLLE II canteen cover (x2)*
-MOLLE II double 40mm grenade pouch
-IIFS butt pack
-MOLLE II flashbang pouch*
-MOLLE II frag grenade pouch*
-MOLLE I FLC vest*
-M16A2
-PASGT helmet
-DCU helmet cover*

My question was, would it be okay to use DCU pouches on the vest? or should I spend the extra money, and get woodland? The flashband pouch, and IIFS buttpack are both DCU cammo. also wondering if it would be okay to use a 'Chocolate chip' helmet cover instead of a DCU one.

In my opinion, it's a time frame I've not seen a lot of other people doing, and I'd like to understand the history more. (making impressions, I learn a LOT about the history.)

almost all USMC gear circa 2003 would have been woodland pattern, only the very very very best equipped would have had matching gear, and even that isn't likely.

as for the choc. chip helmet cover, that would be a no go as they were already starting to replace 6 color desert during the 1st gulf war. it would have been long gone from US inventory by the time '03 rolled around.

Okay, I'll go with the DCU cover. I've seen a video with a Marine in 2003 with a chocolate chip cover, but I just wanted to be sure, and I guess DCU was more common. I've seen some pictures of Marines wearing woodland BDUs, but with desert MARPAT helmet covers. As for the gear, I'll see if I can find those items in woodland. I'll try to find a woodland buttpack too. As for canteen covers, I'm guessing it would be okay for USMC to use ALICE?

Why are you considering woodland pattern BDUs and desert gear? That is the opposite of what most Army and Marine units were using at that time. Even when units were deployed to Iraq in 91 and again in 2003 most soldiers and marines were wearing DCUs with woodland gear.

Chocolate chip was phased out in the early 90s, maybe a few people still had it around in 2003, but it would have been very uncommon. Same thing with ALICE gear, some units might have still had some, but everything would have been MOLLE.

the woodland BDU's were actually probably wearing their MOPP suits for N/B/C operations... underneath the suit they would have been wearing DCU's

This is a little bit earlier than when I was in the Marines, however most of what has been stated is accurate.

During the invasion Marines were wearing MOPP suits in woodland with woodland IBA's and pouches. Some Marines had Coyote IBA's with woodland pouches, this is what I had in 2005. Different units had been wearing DCU uniforms or Desert Marpat, helmet covers were a mix of both. The undershirt is OD green.

I have never seen anyone with DCU pouches or chocolate chip gear in person while in.

Okay, I'll need to get some DCU pants to go with my top then. or should I just get full desert MARPAT?
Bunny wrote:Why are you considering woodland pattern BDUs and desert gear?
I wasn't. I was PLANNING on wearing woodland gear, and woodland cammo. I was asking if it would be fine to have a couple pouches in DCU, which would not be correct, as I've just been told.

Whatever you think is cool.

However, DCU will also be able to be used at larger "milsim" games, more so than MARPAT.
