Gear & Gun Storage: Pics, Details, and Discussion

Post by Bunny » Sat Mar 27, 2010 9:42 pm

Just finished (with Bard's help) building my new airsoft storage shelves. My old ones I had built years ago and were just ugly and didn't work as well as I would have liked. I'm extremely pleased with them so far.

I designed them ahead of time, a few months ago, and then finally got around to buying the lumber and building them this week. This was my original design:
Image

The final product turned out quite well:
Image
I built the shorter rack (and you can see it laying on the shelf in that picture) but didn't actually attach it. I discovered I don't actually need it for any of my AEGs, since they are all tall enough, if I had my P90 here though it would have been required.

With all my stuff loaded on it:
Image
Plenty of space to expand now, I can store up to 10 AEGs on this shelf system, which should be enough to last me a while.
Image

One of my favorite features is the charging station, which has a built-in mounted power strip:
Image

I'm happy, the only thing I'm thinking of changing is making the mag shelf pull out. It is built primarily out of 3/4" cabinet-grade AC plywood, and the whole thing cost about $100 :D

That is nice, I just might steal your design. All my stuff is on a storage shelf in my basement but this shelf would look alot nicer, lol.
You just use 1/2 plywood and a couple 2x4s?

Edited as you were posting to include some more construction details. Besides the plywood it's mostly 2x2, the only 2x4s in the unit are the framing for the base.

Feel free to use the design if you want, I can send you a higher resolution PDF if you'd like. :D

Bunny, instead of making the mag shelf pull out, what about building a surface to pull out above that, just under the top. Kind of like a cutting board, but for working on/maintaining them? 8" seems a little narrow. Nice design though. I think I would need about four of them.

The idea for the pull out shelf is so you can get to all of the shelf, without having to dig in a deep dark hole. I was thinking something similar to this: http://www.kraftmaid.com/browseby/cabin ... geSolution More or less an open front drawer. Trying to get anything out of the back of a four inch high, eighteen inch deep hole would be a pain in the ass.

Very nice!! I have a big dresser type thing but for suits so it's tall and now I'm thinking about doing something similar when I get some guns!

The gun rack is in our office. I'm sitting next to it right now. :)
I confess, Bunny did have to talk me into letting him put his gun rack NOT in the basement (our garage is far too small to fit anything other than cars and bikes). This new one actually looks like a real piece of furniture, so I'm pretty cool with it.

Well I have a separate closet crammed full of tactical gear, bags, and clothing; so that is by no means all my stuff. Otherwise, as I run out of room for guns and gear I generally see it as a sign that I've got too much stuff laying around and get rid of some of it that I don't use regularly anymore.
Shodan wrote:Looks pretty slick! I might have to do a budgeted version of something kinda like that when I finally consolodate my stuff.
Of the $100 this cost me, about $70 of it was the plywood. If you step down from the sanded cabinet-grade AC plywood I used, you can save a decent amount of money. You can knock $10 off the price just by going down to 3/4" BC Plywood, and you can save $30 - $40 by going down to lower grades and thinner board. Finish is a Minwax Ployshade - a stain and water-proof polyurethane treatment in one - and that was $12.

What about the room between the living room and the kitchen, currently filled with books and a table? That would be big enough.

Airsoft/Work Bench

Post by Meith.Killer » Sun May 09, 2010 4:59 pm

Not to be out done by Bunny, here is my bench I have made. No plans what-so-ever, just shot from the hip when building this.
Total material cost was just under $100, this was a fun build and Im pretty happy with how it turned out.

I like the hanging wall you have going there. I built a Bunny-inspired AEG storage unit a few weekends ago, I should get around to posting some pictures. We need a "Post your gun/gear storage thread." ;)

Awesome, thanks DT.

Despite my best efforts I had to continue storing my airsoft gear in the basement, I used to leave it in the cases scattered all over the place but built a rack a couple of weeks ago to keep my important gear and supplies in one spot. I just used cheap 1/2" birch plywood and some simple plans I drew up in SketchUp.

Image

Unfortunately this makes it easier for the wife to count how many AEGs I have, the first thing she asked when she saw the rack was why I needed four weapons since they "all looked the same".

Image

On the wall to the left of the rack lies my work bench, I have another one in the garage that's about twice as long and holds my wood working gear, scroll saw, bench sander and my toaster oven for light Kydex work. I'm hoping to add a drill press and build a small, portable vacuum table by the end of the summer.

I think your rack looks good. :) However I am far more interested in your workbenches and tools *drools* We just don't have that kind of space in our duplex.

I have already learned that despite appearances no two airsoft guns are "the same." :D

My gun storage. Some of my friends store their guns at my house, so its not all mine.
Image

Then the workshop, where all of my..."projects" happen. Its a bit of a mess now, but what workbench isnt? (Ok, all of yours) It also has a door that folds down, to keep "non airsoft related items" out.
Image

As of now i dont have a place to hang and put my gear, but Im workin' on it. I also need a place to put mags, right now they just get tossed in a large tupperware, and I think that'll suffice for a while.

I'm diggin' the flat panel on your workbench uRizen. I just might steal that idea because it's genius. Do you use it for background entertainment like movies, youtubery and other fun, or is it there more to watch tutorials as your tinker around?

I wish I had more room but I have been banished to the crawlspace. It works well and has a 25ft shooting range for testing and playing around.
As an added bonus it cost me nothing to set up as it was all leftovers items we had around the house. :D

That looks awsome some of the ideas, I pretty much just use a gun rack nothin special but It works ha. I might think about trying to maybe make somthing bigger later but I don't have a whole lot of gear yet so this works good right now.

Here is a chunk of our basement that was once full of records, magazines etc. and In about a week on and off Iv'e gotten it to this point. This is now my airsoft workshop/storage space and I have no problems with it. Exposed rafters are nice too.

As this part of the basement has no power I ghetto rigged some of it lol. Sorry for the wall chargers, at lack of smart charger at the moment.
