Hop-up packing - Hard, Medium or Soft?

Post by Guges Mk3 » Wed Aug 18, 2010 10:14 am

Misconceived concept on the internet about hop-up packings. Soft is not just for low FPS and hard is not just for high FPS. It's not that simple.

My response to that question on another forum.

A major factor on deciding what packing to use is your hop-up unit, the barrel and the bb type.

If you have a TBB barrel that is small, say a 6.01mm. The wall of the barrel is thicker then a stock barrel like a TM 6.08mm. If you packing is to hard, it will not stretch down into the barrel very easily. Also if your hop-up is "loose", a hard packing will back off the dialed hop, because it has to much tension from the packing material. Also the BB strikes against the hop-up unit lever arm will also cause the dial to back off.

If you use "polished" BB's you will need a softer packing. If you use "rough" BB's, which fly better by the way, like a golf ball. You want a hard packing.

As you are learning...its not all so simple is it. An AEG is a major mechanical system, it not so simple that you can just apply one thing for the best results.
I rather use a "nightmare" that shoots like a dream over something that looks like a "dream" but shoots like a nightmare.

just curious, what is up with hop-up packings being advertised as different degrees like whats the difference between a 45 degree packing like this one http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=30604
and a 65 or 55 degree such as these http://www.airsoftpost.com/product_info ... s_id=30605

Degrees of hardness.

The higher the number the harder it is and thus it is "less stretchy.
