What is the best way to upgrade an M16

Post by Sharpshot » Wed May 07, 2008 9:40 pm

I have an Echo 1 M16 A4, and I was wondering what are the best ways to upgrade it. I have heard of a few ways to do this, but I was wondering which ones I should look for. Also I have found a few "upgrades" that seem like they would work, but input on them would be appreciated. Here they are:

Barrel extension:
http://store.matrixbb.com/servlet/-strs ... com/Detail

Full "upgrade"
http://store.matrixbb.com/servlet/-strs ... CHO/Detail

6.03 Barrel:
http://store.matrixbb.com/servlet/-strs ... 3mm/Detail
If you have any better options I would like to hear them :D

Don't do anything to the internals until it breaks, you'll just lower the reliability of the gun by opening up. A tightbore barrel is a good idea as it's easy to do and you don't have to crack open the gearbox.

Ok, what benefit does a barrel extension actually give?. Will it increase the range or accuracy, or will it just make it look cool?

I agree. The best upgrade you can do is a tightbore barrel and possibly an "upgraded" hop up bucking. I don't have any experience with how well Echo 1 hop ups perform, so that one is a maybe. I've bought a couple deepfire tightbores from Skunksquatch and like them quite a bit. The prices on them aren't bad either...

There have been a lot of posts about trying to increase range with longer barrels, and the consensus is that it doesn't work because you're using the same ammount of air to push the BB farther. I'm sure if you do a search there are many better explainations out there.

Extending an M16 barrel won't do a whole lot, you'll end up with an unwieldy weapon without giving yourself much of an improvement if any improvement at all.

Ok, do you have any other recommendations as far as upgrading accuracy and range? Also if i do decide to get a tight bore barrel, what brand should I look for?

Winters hit it on the head. No upgrades or accessories will improve a gun's performance more than knowledge and experience with it will. If you do need to upgrade, the best thing you'll do is buy a quality inner barrel and maybe a better hop-up unit or bucking.

Yeah thats true. Well unless anyone else has something to add, I think that answers my question. Thanks guys :D
-Edit- One last question, does anyone have a recommendation as far as a good hop up system?

Do not replace the hop-up system untill you try just replacing the sleeving material first. This material is also known as the Hop-up Packing. Which is incorrectly referred as the hop-up "bucking".

A 6.04/6.03mm barrel, good hop-up packing and good bb's is the best way to improve range and accuracy over anything else.

Ok. I'll look in to the G@P and Guarder, since those seem to be the two that had the best review

For future reference... Is the bucking then the little rubber cylynder that presses up against the packing? Or is it just a made up word that has been incorrectly used for a very long time?

I don't think I've had a chance to say this Guges but that's allot, :( Now when I am browsing ASF or arnie's and people say "bucking" it sticks out and pains me. Similarly when people speak Spanish and pronounce the "h" in many words.

Almost everyone says bucking. With that litle cylinder; I just call the cylinder a nub, a hop up nub, and I mean nub not noob. The "ub" is like in the word "sub" ... maybe I should stop with the video games a little bit? Anyways, I got my packing and nub from skunk. It was only 11 shipped. Anyways. ..yup

I looked into the history of the "bucking" and its use. Every dictionary I found has nothing for "bucking" as a rubber sleeve that surrounds a "pipe".

However, packing was found to be a common naval/plumber term and the "true" definition of the use and function of the hop-up material that surrounds the barrel.

All the dictionary say on bucking is what an animal does to a rider to get them off their back.

As for the common mis-use...its the syndrome where people use only what they "know" or learned.

You really are spending exceeding a stock CA or marui...
Barrel is good, I have a 6.01mm =D G&P hopup...might as well get a h-nub spacer instead...
Echo shoots around M110, I doubt you'll need that. However, get a PDI 170 or Guarder Sp120 if you want to work on something internal.
I dunno if the metal body really worth your money at the moment. If you want to go into your gearbox, i suggest get a piston, a spring guide and check on your seals.
I have a new JBU 6.03mm and a PDI 170 if you choose to save some $$$.
Oh and, don't forget to buy ammo for your launcher, i wonder if it comes with it... I'd use 0.12s with it.

Well, the only real reasons I want the metal body are A). I cracked my plastic one(from falling a few times
B). My selector switch on my plastic one has now become loose, and it is firing auto on semi gear. So I figured if i am going to have to get a new selector switch, and my body is already cracked, I may as well get something stronger

As far as springs...the Guarder sp120 was a good suggestion, but I have had a lot of good success using PHX 130 for reliability, or even an PHX 140 if you want to push it, in echo guns. That might be beyond your guy's FPS limits though.

i would check around on the quality of the Metal Body. I say this over and over...metal doe not mean, quality. Some metal bodies like the G&P are rather brittle and crack when someone falls on them. Find out if the MB is cast or machined. Cast is bad...machined is better...way better.
