FREEFALL V July 16th & 17th (Who's going thread)

Post by Irish » Mon Feb 14, 2011 12:34 pm

The game is based/themed after the tv series Firefly, and the follow up movie Serenity.

Please note that this is NOT the official game post, so this isn't the place for questions. I'm familiar with the rules that have been posted for previous years, but modifications have been made every year.

As of now, there isn’t an official post yet for the game, but I have confirmed with two sources that it will happen again this year at Apoc and will be July 16 - 17th. Shady and I will be starting a CREW.

For those of you that want to know more….www.freefallgame.com (website has not been updated yet, so the event info from last year is still up)
TOC will have a private forum on facebook for the CREW we are putting together. You can PM me if you’re interested in rolling with us.

The 16th is earmarked for the MAA Open Session....so currently I would be out. Given possible changes in the organization maybe I could attend....but right now I am thinking I won;t be able to make it.

I'm out, but it's going to be worth it. I'll be attending John Farnam's DTI Advanced Handgun Course.

Have fun though, I'd love to play at Freefall!

Oh heck yes. I have been planning for this one since last year's ended. I have been fortuante enough to maintain a single contiguous character this whole time, so I must return in the same capacity.

Freefall is a great game if you have ever wanted more freedom at an event. You can basically do whatever you want within the bounds of the rules. Last year there were the people working for larger factions, but also freelance mercenaries, shop keepers, ship crews and corporate types running a mine. Some folks were running a casino, and the ingame economy runs on a currency that can be used to acquire real stuff, so there is plenty of incentive to get wealthy. Want to try to rob the bank? Go for it. Hide out in the field and wage a guerilla campaign against the Alliance? You bet. Just be prepared for consequences. People do not take kindly to being robbed and/or murdered, and if the local authorities do not hunt you down, your victim's friends may very well do it themselves. The past two years death required you to perform some mundane role for an hour before you could respawn as a new character.

It is not an event to attend if you just want two days of nonstop gunplay. You will be bored. Even as a merc, most of your time will be spent waiting for and looking for work. No one is guaranteed to pay you either. Every kind of backstab has happened in the past. :)

from what i can recall the Merc's ( i was supposed to be one) are to use typical contractor looks. IE kakhi pants and black shirts and whichever rig. Full auto at night is not allowed. Close kills are supposed to be made using Nerf guns or foam swords. Rekkon confirm.

Not exactly sure yet, but we're thinking some sort of humanoid species, crossed with a well known alien 8) .

Indeed. Start shopping now. Last year's models should be on clearence by now.
I do believe I nabbed up the last 'stormshadow' katana in the midwest.
I have one chain gun (very popular last year from what I hear), several other nerf shooters, and several melee weapons. Still adding more.

I'm always a bad guy (Thunder, Irene, etc.). I want to play independent. Not Alliance for sure and that may just be game organizers....and I believe Reavers were a special class controlled by the organizers for specific things....so I'd rather play a Browncoat or something non tactical. I have already been thinking up a loadout and there was nothing tactical about it. Leather gun belts and harnesses, not even cargo pants for cryin' out load. SAAs, Mare's Leg, 1887 Shotgun, maybe a modded silly mini M4 pistol for emergencies but I want to get immersed into this game.

I went last year and will go again this year without doubt. Things to clarify for those that have never been to one of these events: I was there 2 days and spent less then a mag and i think most was at the chrono. This is the type of event where it looks cool but dose not really work would be a bonus. Those that know the field we control the entire field the entire weekend and that place is big. As for the larp aspect a name a little backstory (preferable set against the firefly universe) is all you need its not enforced but it adds to the experience. For the nerf guns bring lots of darts you will lose them.

I like the way you think Arch. In a way, that was what I was trying to get at. Ill be rockin the brown leather, but it'll just be the shotty and my trusty 1911 or glock hanging off me. Definitly ready for this game!

Any idea on the mag capacities? If I can, I wanna rock my 552 project gun.

Well this thread certainly exploded. Now to cover questions (keep in mind that rules might change this year):

Magazines.
Pistols and shotguns can use whatever. AEGs are limited to one high cap and unlimited non-winding. SAWs can use box mags. Mags can only be reloaded at ammo crates.

Uniforms.
Basically anything. Individual factions may set their own uniform standards. You are of course encouraged to look your part, but only about two factions last year had uniform standards, one of the ship crews and the Alliance. When I started I bought a cotardie to supplement existing attire and gear, but that was it.

Weapons.
NERF and boffer melee weapons are allowed and encouraged. These are of course nearly useless vs. airsoft, but they are the only weapons allowed in the town (safe zone), so if you are going to spend a bunch of time there, you might want one for self defense. There were a LOT of NERF weapons (stunners) last year, including quite a few of the belt fed models. Neither are required, and there are brawling (hand to hand) rules, but swords beat hands and stunners beat swords. Also, you need an "edged" weapon to finish off wounded players. Freefall is also an excellent event to break out all those "cool" weapons that are not the most skirmishable pieces, because you are not necessarily relying on gunplay the whole time, and if you want to backstab someone, you can often take them by surprise.

Last year's rules are still available on the official website if you want to read them in full.

Factions.
This is not a two or three faction event. There are at least a dozen, and you are free to make your own at will. To rattle off a few from last year there was of course the Alliance, local law enforcement, a local militia, many mercenary units plus a contractor company to organize merc contracts, a megacorp running the casino and operating the mine (which actually extracts gems to tie into the local economy), shopkeepers selling food for ingame money and three or four ship crews (vehicles are frequently skiffs and bigger ones like RVs represent spaceships) going about their business looking for work/cargo.

My character:
When I started with Freefall two years ago, I contacted Gryphon (the organizer) and asked if he had any roles he wanted filled. That year was the first one at Apoc, and he was introducing a new faction that needed people, so I got in on the ground floor as their field commander. They are the Followers of the True Path, a militant messianic cult based on the border moon of Ataraxia where the event is set. I did not really make up a backstory, though Gryphon provided some basics since I was filling a planned role. Rekkon was an unhappy mercenary on Persephone until he encountered the Follower's Prophet and came to follow his teachings. When unspecified events happened to our Prophet, I graduated to the leadership role last year. Since I and my faction have survived, I plan to return to lead them again this year. Event results roll over from year to year, so if you survive, your assets can be carried over, as well as field disposition, faction relations, etc.

Thus I will not be joining anyone’s crew this year, and I already have a backup character in place. That said, I am in need of more players for the Followers, so if anyone wants to join a powerful existing faction with plenty of perks, shoot me a PM. I have already been talking with another team, and they might be providing one or more vehicles for us. I am purposefully being a bit vague on details; Freefall makes heavy use of confidential faction information. Half of the fun is not knowing what everyone is up to and weaving your own tangled webs of ulterior motives. I will say we are not friendly with the Alliance (which is not the same as overtly hostile). I am willing to expound via PM, though full disclosure will only come with a commitment to join the Followers. You can of course switch characters mid-event if you wish, I only ask that you do not metagame and only use/act on information that your new charter has gathered.

I was thinking if we can get enough people we could be our own faction/group. Maybe a group of displaced settlers/terraformers. Whether from the Alliance, which would mean we'd be anti Alliance, or from Reavers, which would likely mean we left in a hurry so we are willing to do undesirable things to survive. I know Irish has an angle as well....maybe we go pro alliance as some kind of Blue Sun project off shoot (think Daggers from Seaquest), maybe a group of undercover agents. Maybe we go as smugglers and spend the entire day trying to steal and move contraband? Again, I am not much into LARPing but this is a non standard role based game where you still could shoot some people. Not too interested in the Nerf aspect but I realize what they are going for. It'd be funny if we set up a space in town, then set up defenses like the Nerf rail guns, in case of people trying to get into our area. Maybe build an EZ Up area, with walls, that is our warehouse of illegal goods. We can set up to load and hang out and whatever....but we can also set up a desk for business and have people as "bouncers". Set up people in the town to warn us of alliance patrols. Maybe space gypsies....trying to make a run at Ataraxia, make some money and then bounce out. I dunno, a lot of possibilities.

Foam bladed weapons to finish people off? Check. I am in for that. I have had some pretty interesting ideas about this game if I were to say....go rogue.

Rekkon, what are the night rules. If people just want to hang out can they avoid the in game camp?

Gabe, I think a 'Order of the Maa' would be cool. We could have different "crews" within our own group with their own agendas, but if/when the time comes we band together... Just thinking out loud. The nice thing about this game is we're all good guys, and bad guys :{

Your blade does not need to be foam, it can be a standard rubber bayonet. NERF guns represent "stunners," giving you a short range non-lethal weapon. More importantly they are the only projectile weapon allowed in the safe zone. They are not requried, in fact no equipment beyond eye protection is, and that only if you plan to enter the field. It is completely feasible, though inadvisable, to go unarmed in this game. You can roleplay to whatever degree you want. A fair number of people show up just to be mercenaries and shoot things. The real draw is that you have almost absolute freedom in that regard. Any hostile operations are planned and executed entirely by the players. The organizer might provide some outside direction for the larger factions (like Alliance High Command or the megacorp's board of directors), but smaller ones are left to their own devices. You could bring in a crew with the sole plan of knocking over the bank. Mill about in town observing patterns, making contacts and gathering intel while waiting for an opportunity to strike. The Followers got backstabbed by a merc unit last year when they decided to fake interest in a contract and try to take over our castle. Few lived to regret it, and we made sure regret it they did.

Oh, last year was over 200 people, plus at least three vehicles.

Night rules are basically the same as the day rules, and the town/safe area is NOT isolated from combat. It has been raided by Reavers pretty much every year (with melee weapons and stunners only). However, if you set up a tent/vehicle, the interior of it is considered out of play and inviolable. You are safe inside, and any game items inside cannot be stolen. Thus I believe it is perfectly possible to lounge around the town for the night game and if it gets raided, retreat into your own safe area. The safe zone is still safe in that no airsoft is allowed and you can remove eye protection.

Arch, Gryphon mentioned that the mining system is getting expanded this year, so you could be a group of displaced prospectors nomadically searching the field for sources of ataraxite (gems). Then work (and defend) the claim to extract its riches or perhaps sell its mineral rights to the megacorp for a quick buck. Send parties back into town for supplies, etc. Freefall is set several years before the events of the series, putting it only one or two years after the Unification War, so if your people were browncoats, anti-Alliance sentiment probably remains high.

Rekkon, What if I have a vehicle that I'd be willing to bring on the field?
Is that allowed? I couldn't find a specific yes or no in the rule set.

Goddammit all....I just spent the last hour looking at not only Nerf guns but how to mod them. A bunch of the PALADIN guys got into Nerf while at my cabin one year and started modding guns....now there are a TON of new guns and things to do with them. I have already worked out a Nerf load out I will be purchasing very soon regardless of this game....

I of course....would like to be a Brown Coat....but amongst our group we can be a mixed bag of people all unified for a certain goal but at the same time we could have side deals as well....

It's times like this that I'm glad I work at a thrift store. We get about 10,000 nerf guns a week, when the kids get bored of them.

I know Tank really wants one of those....I am likely to get a Stampede. It's a bit cheaper so if I break it when I mod it I won't freak out. We'll have to do a group buy on darts....

That thing sucks. It's impressive, but it doesn't feed for shit and only shoots about 10 feet.

Roger that. I'm thinking we fought together (as independents) against the Alliance. Maybe we were a 'unit' of sorts. After the war, we scattered throughout the verse. A couple years later, almost as if it's fate, we're all on the same moon at the same time. What does it mean?

There are a few "knock-off" nerf guns that are worth checking out. I have the "thompson-style" knock-off. It has an electric motor to shoot and rotate the drum mag. Works pretty well. I have the itch to paint it now...

Irish, that would be a question for Gryphon, the organizer. All I can tell you is that there were quite a few vehicles on the field last year, so your odds are probably good. I still need to talk to him about the potential vehicles for the Followers. Fortunately I can accost him at MOA events. If I see him this weekend, I will bring it up.

The nerd factor of this group is impressive. The LARP thing frightens me. Maybe because I had a neighbor in Detroit who was active with the SCA. Their mead was good though . . .

Yes, Irish and Co., I am 100% in for this one!

I wanted to ask....what the alcohol policy was? I assume there's either the standard you drink and you are out of any participation rule....or there may be a strict NO ALCOHOL rule. Just wondering as this kind of event would seem to be more socially oriented.
