Now Recruiting!

Post by collin » Thu Dec 03, 2009 1:50 pm

Me and 4 of my friends have formed an airsoft team, named The Fallen. As of now we are looking to recruit 3-5 members of any age above 14. All skill and experience levels are welcome. PM me or Vertigo if you are interested or would like more information.

Thanks,
The Fallen

I would like too, I don't have any experience at actual skirmishes, but am looking forward to next season, but I have played with friends before, they thought it was fun, but didn't want to go to a field, but I want to continue this passion. I still need gear but i have guns... let me know alright?

Oh and if it helps I am 19, and live in Mound. My guns are as follows...
Mauser L96... (yes, like every other noob, I bought a cool looking sniper.... *shame*)
G&G UMG.... It's amazing

Great to see that so many want to join! :D We will start practices sometime next year just so everyone nows how to be on a team. We excpect everyone to have quality gear, or at least is working on getting quality gear. As of now I am negotiating with a few online dealers about sponsorships. I do not expect any sponsorships untill late next year or perhaps the next, depending on how many games we attend. PM if you want to know anything else.

Yeah that may be true, but most of our members are around 15-16 years of age. Not to be disrespectful to anybody, but I dont exactly trust younger kids maturity levels. That is I dont really like playing with some younger kids, they dont it seriously enough or even at all. See my neighbor is twelve, and he loves airsoft. He lacks all knowledge and frequenlty shoots me from close range because he thinks it os 'funny'. He once shot me from around 3 feet away in the lip, luckily for me it was a crappy spring pistol, but it still hurt like hell. They just dont show enough maturity, at least the majority dont. That goes the same with the little brother (12 as well) of one of my friends. He doesnt realize the danger of these guns, and actually killed what at the time looked to be a woodpecker (not big on birds so I woulnt know). Now I'm not saying that all kids are like that, and I am not trying to discourage anybody away from airsoft, I am just encouraging those kids to gain more knowledge before participating. So that kid that is 13 now, in a year (or when ever your old enough) I would be glad to have you on the team, just as long as you know what you are doing.

I'm twelve but am very serious with things that need to be. I know the danger of power tools and guns. I uncle lost 2 finger from a electric saw that spun out of control and my other uncle got shot in the leg from a hunter(he was even wearing full orange when he got shot) who thought we was a bear(which is odd because my uncle is only 5 10"). I would very much like to join when I'm old enough.

It's fine, you can join if you want, but you can only legally play when you're 14. For now I suggest you start saving up, because the number one rule of airsoft is to have a lot of money. It's up to you if you want to practice with us, but I think you should. Collin, it's fine if younger kids want to join. We can be the ones to teach them about things. Once we're done with them, they'll be fine. We were their age one and two years ago, too. So yeah, anyone who's not old enough should probably just practice with us and start saving up money.

Again, my email is Cormier@q.com, any question at all just ask.

So Collin right now we have you, me, John, Richard, and Cameron. With the 5 new recruits, I think we should stop recruiting for now. Unless someone really really wants to join. For everyone who is now a recruit, we're going to need your emails so we can send you practice information and stuff like that.

Vertigo, I have no problem with the younger kids. I just want to make sure they have high enough maturity level for airsoft. That being said I'm all for people joining the team, of any age. All I care about is making sure that everyone on my team now or anyone that will be on my team, understands what airsoft is all about.

And yes Vertigo that is everyone that is on our team as of now. And I want everyone who wants to join to send me or Vertigo and email. Either that or a PM would suffice. You can reach me at reyersoncollin@yahoo.com

For all of you who are interested in joining, there are a few basic guidelines that we would like you to follow:
1) You need to have a parent who is able to drive yout= to events and training. Most of the time, however, we carpool.
2) You must have at least one working AEG or gas operated gun. we do not except springers, except in the case of snipers.
3) You must be working on a complete gear outfit, or have one already. At the bare minimum you must have camo and goggles/facemask
4) You must be able to with stand cardio workouts (thats right one of the best things you can do while not playing airsoft is working out)
5) Make sure you read some of stickies around the forums to better understand the game.

Thanks,
The Fallen

Why does Cameron have to leave? He is part of the team, LOGAN :D! BTW Mr.MG42, we currently have participated in First Force open sessions, and plan on attending games by the MAA starting next year. As of right now we are negotiating with the city that most of us live in to let us use unused land for training.

This has all been going along perfectly well...and I'm glad. Players should meet....but I want to share some sage advice if I may.

Teams that form based off of random players who have never met, don't know each other in any way not to mention how someone even plays....NEVER work. Let me reiterate, NEVER work. I'm not trying to discourage you in any way, just being realistic. If people are serious about forming a team, you MUST meet and at least start a friendship. I know some people in the Fallen know each other, great....but the extent of said relationship has to go beyond the internet.

Training, uniforms, gear, and all that other stuff....doesn't mean squat if you don't have the foundation to last.

For the command element of this Team, I would dissuade you from recruiting without at least seeing how someone plays first. It's nothing personal but open enrollment is seldom a good thing.

The key element to a successful team is like personalities. You can learn tactics and peoples strengths and weaknesses. You can write playbooks and have contingencies and a duty structure....but if you don't know or worse don't like the people you're playing with....you will fail before you begin.

New guys seem to be in such a hurry to be on or start a team. Some, before they have even played one game (and I sustain, 2 on 2 while fun, is not a game. 50 on 50 is a game). Don't be in such a rush. Play the game. Get to know others. Get to know yourself. Build relationships. THEN start a team and pick people based on experience.

I just had to intervene. If you go along your current course and it works. Congratulations, you'd be the first. Take it or leave it....

Listen to Gabe - listen to Gabe :D

I've been holding back on commenting, but, since the floodgates have been broken...

If you guys want to get together and "train" and stuff, that's fine. But you need to keep a few things in mind. Training is no substitute for playing. You can't train for the pressure of a large team shooting back, and having objectives to worry about, and a large course. Practicing 5 on 5 just won't prepare you for a 50+ person game.

You also need to keep in mind, airsoft is a non-competitive sport. There are no (or at least, very very very few) sponsorships, no competition games, no awards. The most you're going to find is an informal team vs team game, which even then has historically been very difficult to make happen (Gabe has tried very hard). So really, with that said, the only reason for a team is to have a group of people you like to play with, and play well with. If you're just randomly getting together, that's not going to happen.

Team PALADIN, MS-40 Rangers, FoRT, Morris: they're all groups of friends, who happen to play airsoft together, rather than just a bunch of people who play airsoft together.

I'm a member of Morris Team; how did we get started? Well, we all met at college, through mutual friends. Bunny and Trippy were floormates, and later housemates, Keyser and I were floormates, and then Bunny and I were housemates. The reason we work well together is that we know each other very well. We're very close friends, and we've played together in enough open sessions and Ops, that we usually know exactly what the other person is going to be doing on the field at any given time. This didn't come out of randomly recruiting people we'd never met, and training. It came out of friendship and time. Over time we've met people at open sessions that we enjoyed playing with, such as Turkey Vulture, MCXL, Urizen, and Magnus, and they've become part of our group as well. But the key thing is it happened naturally. That's what you guys want to be shooting for, because that's what's really fun -- when you're playing with people you just genuinely enjoy hanging out with.

First off I would like to thank the two of you for your input, and I completely understand what your saying. In fact I agree with what you guys are saying. This is what I truely mean by 'recruiting'; as of right now (since it is the off season) we are wondering if there any players around our ages who would like to join a team. As we all know it is much easier to make friends with people who like airsoft who are also near your age. In this way we can cooridinate a game that most of us can attend. This way we can all play a game and get to know eachother a little better. We qould then play more and more games together, and after a while a team would form based on the strengths and weaknesses of eachother. This post is more of preliminary for a team, if you know what I am saying.

Well then, it looks like you've put more thought into this than just "I want to form a team", which is great. Play to have fun, and to meet new people. If a "team" comes out of that, then great. If not, no harm done. Don't try to force anything, or make things more complicated than they need to be. Just go out there and have some fun!

A lot of people coming into airsoft lately really seem to want to get out there and impress people, or have lots of cool stuff, or try to look like they know everything about everything. They seem to forget that a hobby should be an easy and fun way to relax, and indulge in your interests. It looks like you've got a pretty good understanding of that, and aren't going to get too wrapped up in it all - that's good!

I understand what you mean about it being easier to make friends with people your own age. But, when you get to games, don't worry too much about it. Once we all get together, we usually end up acting like a bunch of teenagers anyways. As long as you play safe, and have fun, you'll fit in with everybody, from the teenagers to the guys in their 20's, 30's, or beyond.

We are not saying we don't want you on the team, and nothing of sorts. All we are saying is that we would prefer to play a few games with the other guys before making any decisions

Hello The Fallen. I am the team Leader of Team Vendetta, and I would like to welcome you to these boards. :D. It sounds like you have a pretty good idea of how you want to start forming into a team, but I would like to offer one suggestion. Even though it is too cold to play airsoft, that does not mean you can not work on team building. What our team has decided to do is every two weeks, we have a team meeting to catch up/discuss important things like games. This way, we stay in touch, and work on cohesion at the same time. If you were to do the same, you could build up friendship before you even get out on a field. These meetings, depending what you do, can also be a whole lot of fun. Oh, and, one final thing. When you feel up to it, Team Vendetta is always looking for teams to play. Good luck with the team :D , and see you next year on the fields.

Collin, I think we should all download an IM program and have a team section so we can talk to each other whenever someone is on. Which program do you think we should use? AIM?

I would recommend Yahoo Messanger, works the best and smoothest, you have to download the messanger though.
Good luck with the team!

I did not catch this back in December, but now that I see it I have to say that I am impressed with your structure and state of mind. You give me hope for the people too young to play legally, but still have the fire. The time that you took to plan this out, the openness to the senior members suggestions, and your genuine interest in the game make me look forward to seeing you on the field. Keep up the good work.

This is geared towards paintball, but I've been offering it as guidance to new Airsoft teams for years:
HOW TO BUILD A TEAM
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

That's right, BUILD. Not form, not organize, but build. A team is built with blood sweat and (sometimes) tears. Buildings and maintaining a team is the single most difficult thing to do. I know, I've done it. Well, I actually helped build a CLUB, but it's a TEAM to us.

The idea of a team appeals to a great many players. It is a strongly knit collection of like-minded players, it can be a group from your neighbourhood, your office, or just a bunch of folks you play with. No matter what the word "team" means to you, there are certain things you have to remember when you're building and maintaining one.

SCHEDULE

Establish a playing schedule. Once or twice a month should suffice. Set up the schedule at the first of the season and have all team members jot down the playing dates on the family calender. This way, family members can easily see when the resident paintballer is going to be playing and family activities can be planned around them. Try not to schedule play dates during long weekends as this is when families like to get together, especially if it is some sort of national holiday. Days like Mother's Day and Father's Day and anniversaries are to be avoided. (Of course, playing regularly on wedding anniversaries may end up giving you more free time -- but that's not the way you want to go, trust me.)

COMMITMENT

Players who belong to the team must be committed to the team's playing schedule. Most, if not all, of them must be willing to give up personal and family time to play on the scheduled play dates.

POSITIONS

You will need a team captain, a coach, an administrator/treasurer and a coordinator. These positions can be combined, if you are a small team. The Team Captain controls the team on the field. The coach advises and directs the team off the field. The coordinator handles playing reservations for the local field, arranges things like rental cars, transportation and lodging if you're heading out of town. The administrator/treasurer takes care of the various other things teams need to keep track of.

The larger your team, the less you can afford to have one person doing several jobs.

NUMBERS

Always have more team members than you need. If you're forming a five player team, have at least eight members on your team roster. That way, when a couple of players can't make it, you still have enough players to conduct a practice.

DISCIPLINE

Set up rules for your team and enforce them. Rules like safe playing practices should always be enforced. If you have set up a team so that you will have like-minded players, rules can be put into place to allow you to preserve the "spirit" under which the team was formed. To give you an example, our club (The Canadian Contingent Paintball Club) has established rules that make things (like close range shooting, over shooting and the infamous dead man's walk) against the rules of play. We have "created our own reality".

WHAT IS YOUR MISSION?

Our mission statement is "to make paintball safe fun and affordable". To that end, we have established ourselves a recreational group who just wants to go out and play. We also have a competition team for local tournies (Team CanCon) for those who wish to experience the thrill of competing against other teams. Your mission could be to be a local tourney team, a recreational club, a scenario game team or you can strive to participate in professional tournies like the NPPL and GWS.

PRACTICE

A lot of professional players mandate drills. Flag grabbing drills, bunker drills, etc. This is all well and good, but nothing substitutes for actual playing. Over the years I have found the ultimate and only drill you'll need to become a good team. I call it the "Stacked Odds Drill". You should be playing full games (capture the flag, etc) but play them with two on three, three on one, four on two, etc. If you can handle multiple opponents in practice, just imagine how you'll do against a single opponent. The Stacked Odds Drill teaches you to keep your head up and keep track of things going on around you. This drill is essential as teams rarely finish a game at full strength, win or lose.

Each game you play, some skill should be stressed and players should be made aware that they should be concentrating on that particular skill. Concentrate on movement, use of cover, shooting, communication, etc. The reason for this is simple, during a practice it is easier to concentrate on one thing than trying to focus on everything. This also gives the coach an easier time of assessing the players in the game.

This is not a good tactic to use during a tourney.

WALK-ONS

Team members should be encouraged to play whenever they can, outside of scheduled team days. They can play as walk-ons. Any type of playing experience is good for a player. A word of caution though, don't expect to be on the same side as your teammates. In fact, you should insist that your team should be spilt up. (See Recruiting, and you'll see what I'm getting at.)

Also, dust off, or buy, a pumpgun and go and play against semis. One: You won't be "newbie bashing". Two: Your skill will improve faster as you are not relying on firepower and must use your wits to out-fox opponents with semis. Three: Being under-gunned will force you to team up with another player and you'll be learning teamwork.

RECRUITING

Always be on the lookout for new members. They don't have to be experienced, but they should have their own equipment. Providing equipment to another player is costly and you really want someone who has spent the time and money on equipment so that you know they want to play. Occasionally you'll find a "super newbie" that takes to the game like a duck to water, but this is a rarity.

This is why playing as a walk-on is essential, you will meet other players and have a chance to see them in action and work beside them.

Invite prospective members out to play, tell them what you're about and that you'd like to see more of them at the field. Eventually, if things work out, they'll be a part of your team.

HANG OUT

If you can, hang out after the play day is over. Socializing with team members is also a way to build trust between teammates.

CONCLUSION

This will not make you invincible, but you will become a good, solid team of players. Ask about the Canadian Contingent at Paintball Long Island, Cousins and EMR Paintball Park -- it will prove to you my theories are sound.
